Underbelly Became The Albatross ... and Downtown Jacksonville Kept Its Weird Side

Underbelly did not die. The Bay Street venue became The Albatross, kept the stage, and gave Downtown Jacksonville a darker new place to make noise.

Underbelly did not close and leave another dark doorway on Bay Street. Longtime Jacksonville music bookers Mike Ciero and Steve Blaisdell took over the room, renamed it The Albatross, and kept the part Downtown actually needed: a stage where a local band and a touring act can both make the walls sweat.

Open the current calendar, pick the night that makes you grin, and use the rest of this story to see how the room got here.

Why Underbelly became The Albatross

The official name change landed in April 2025. Ciero told Folio Weekly that he and Blaisdell wanted an identity that felt like them instead of wearing somebody else's old jacket.

Fair enough.

Underbelly carried real weight in Jacksonville. It began behind Anomaly in Five Points in 2010, moved to 113 E Bay St in 2012, closed in 2015, and came roaring back in 2021. Plenty of people have a favorite show tied to one version of that room.

The new owners did not pretend that history never happened. They just stopped treating the old name like museum glass.

The Albatross menu remembers the rooms Jacksonville lost

The funniest part of the rebrand may be the food.

The current menu names dishes after closed Jacksonville music venues. Burro Bar is a Cuban sandwich. Club 5 is a loaded wrap. Einstein A Go-Go is fried chicken with kimchi and sweet Thai chili. Fuel comes back as loaded tots. Rain Dogs is a smoked sausage dog.

Jacksonville has buried enough good music rooms to fill a menu.

The Albatross turned that into lunch.

That little move says more about the place than a polished brand statement ever could. The room changed names, but it still knows exactly which city it lives in.

The Albatross still knows how to make a night weird

The current calendar is gloriously hard to explain to one person.

A metal show can give way to a goth night. A cult movie screening can sit beside an unofficial Smashing Pumpkins after-show dance party. Clownvis Presley can appear a few nights later because apparently Downtown Jacksonville has not suffered enough normal behavior.

Good.

This is not a bar trying to sand off every sharp edge so everybody will call it nice. The Albatross says it wants an inclusive and safe home for underground arts and culture. Then it books the kind of calendar that makes that promise feel real.

The Albatross is bigger than a concert ticket

The room still works when there is no band in front of you.

There is street food with vegan options. The bar pours beer and liquor, but it also keeps nonalcoholic beer, mocktails, coffee, and milkshakes in the mix. That matters when a group wants one night together without everybody ordering the same kind of night.

The Albatross also keeps the local circle tight. Folio reported collaborations with Flamingo Coffee, Bold City Brewery, and Green Room Brewing during the rebrand.

Locally owned is easy to print on a window.

Putting other Jacksonville businesses behind the bar is where it starts to count.

Plan a night at The Albatross

The Albatross is at 113 E Bay St in Downtown Jacksonville. Check the current official calendar before going because this room can be all ages one night and built for the after-midnight crowd the next.

If you want more than one stop, open the Downtown Jacksonville guide. For the wider city, the Bars and Nightlife pages put The Albatross beside the other rooms that can carry the rest of the night.

Underbelly had a history.

The Albatross has a pulse.

We checked the ownership and rebrand against Folio Weekly, the room's history against The Jaxson and Jacksonville Music Experience, and its current open status against the venue's official website, social links, and October 2026 ticket calendar.
